How we protect our email

Here at Spectrum, our email is carefully screened. There is no S.P.A.M. at Spectrum. Both incoming and outgoing mail are scanned for virus infections, trojans, worms  and other exploitations. Here's what we do and how we do it.

On our mail server. We have implemented offsite checks for every email.

First, when an email is coming into our system, we check with three lists at Spamhaus.org.  The Spamhaus Block List (SBL) is a realtime blocklist of spam sources and spam services.  If this passes, we check XBL there. The Exploits Block List (XBL) is a realtime blocklist of illegal 3rd party exploits (proxies/worms/trojans).  Here we also check ROKSO.  The Register of Known Spam Operations (ROKSO) database collates information and evidence on known professional spam operations that have been terminated by a minimum of 3 Internet Service Providers for spam offenses.

Now, if it has passed both of these, we check Spamcop.net. This is a list of reported spammers. Finally, the email is checked against ORDB.  ORDB.org is the Open Relay Database. ORDB.org is a non-profit organisation which stores a IP-addresses of verified open SMTP relays. These relays are, or are likely to be, used as conduits for sending unsolicited bulk email.

Finally, your incoming email is checked with our Master Domain List ("greatdeals.com") and our Master subject list ("Free Cable TV"). These are toast. These lists are updated daily.

If the email makes it past all of these, it's checked for virus and trojan infection with AVG Anti-Virus.

Finally, the email makes it to your mailbox. But that's not all. Every five minutes, our spam checker (Spam Assassin) reads the email and computes a "Spam Score". This uses such criteria as entire lines of upper case, all red text, more images than text etc. If the spam score exceeds a certain level, the subject is rewritten with a *** SPAM *** in front of the text.

But wait, there's more. Every five minutes another Spam Killer reads the email. This applies to the email more filters we have entered. Keywords and phrases are checked. Subject line, body, senders address are all checked. If it doesn't pass here, it goes to a Kill file. These killed emails are manually reviewed several times a day. Anything that is from a real person gets rescued. Everything else is trashed.

Our protective features delete 60-100 emails per day per user!

If your ISP doesn't protect you from this junk, we invite you to ask them to contact us and we'll demonstrate just how they can do this too.
